RTA F40PH Plow
« on: December 12, 2012, 04:54:21 AM »

I'm planning to convert one of my Amtrak F40PH's into the early RTA scheme but I can't seem to find the flat and slanted type of plow used. It looks exactly like the one for a Santa Fe FP45; would anyone know of a source for these?
Does Athearn sell parts for their locomotives separately?

Thanks in advance,
Alvin

Direct answer: no that plow has not been made in N. However, you're aware of the forthcoming Metra version from Kato, yes? The HO version had the "flat" plow, not sure if the N version will. Granted, it will have ditch lights, but also the marker lights you need. Easier to remove the ditch lights than add the markers I think!

Also, in HO they have done the RTA scheme, so if you wanted to wait...

My guess is the ditch lights will be recessed like on the Amtrak version they just released.  Metra's aren't like that.  They have their own housing like the red marker lights.

I know the Metra version is coming in 2013, but I'm not holding my breath that they'll have both the flat plow and correct marker/ditch light housings :|. I'm using one of the original run F40PH's and am probably just going to simulate the red marker housings with similar size ditch light castings and red 0603s. It doesn't seem very likely that Kato would do the two different types of ditch lights in N as they did for HO, especially since both the Caltrain numbers released already should have had extended housings.

Hi Wutter

Not long been a member of Railwire and just stumbled across your post.

I have completed the project you are wishing to do and had the same problem about the plow, here in the UK there is a range of static models by Del Prado, I got a FP45 for £4.00[about $6.00] and salvaged the plow. Need to get better pictures.
