I was just watching an in-cab video of a CN SD50F.  It showed the speedometer as the train was rolling.  This is one of the speedometers that has the speeds on the outer edge of the meter face and LEDs that light up, or go out, as the speed increases or decreases.  In the center of the dial is digital readout.  The video was so fuzzy I couldn't see what it was.  The numbers in the readout were either a zero or something around 2 or 3 as the train was moving.  It never seemed to go above those numbers.  Anyone know what the readout is showing?

Might be an 'over speed' or acceleration indicator.

I think this is similar.

Yup - it's an acceleration indicator, in MPH per minute. It has both positive and minus values. IOW, if it reads "5" and you are going 20 MPH, in one minute from now you should be going 25.

So, I guess today's hoggers need to carry a calculator so they can do the math and figure out how fast they will be going at a certain point to avoid those overspeed demerits<g>.  Why not just have a +/- indicator to tell them if they are speeding up or slowing down?  Do they really need to be that precise? Seems like overkill to me but then again, I'm not an engineer.
