I don't know about the 1960s/70s, but from what I understand today, any automobiles that were in a derailment will be scrapped and covered by insurance, even if they're not visibly damaged. They won't/can't sell cars as new that have been in an accident.

I hadn't heard about this.  It could have been a whole lot worse, fortunately no injuries:

I only heard about it because a friend happened to be railfanning Tehachapi and sent pictures.  Not sure I can share them though.
