well, the statement about 6 axle switchers are not too common never really looked at the Espee!. There were about a dozen SD7E's switching Colton on 9-11-1996 when the Borg killed the Espee. I remember watching a pair of SD38's switching out Delores, and the SP took their mutch hated RSD15's and C-628's and used them for switchers

I prefer a matched pair of Atlas SD35's for yard switching, GP38/40 for branchline work.

From about 1990 or 1995 for about 10-20 later, CSX commonly used SD40s in the 2400 series for yard work.  Such a unit was at Waycross and at Acca yard in Richmond.

They also used MP15AC/MP15DC/MP15Ts.  Two MP15Ts worked Montgomery for years.

Mobile used MP15T and even a B30-7 for switching.

The Penn Central typically used SD7's & 9's as switchers.

Norfolk Southern just leased the rail lines downtown to a new company, there's now an SW1500 from LTEX sitting on the rails; switcher trucks and all, for running the line (it's decently short, maybe 12.something miles total). Really, you can probably get away with anything as a switcher

True.  Most railroads use whatever is
1:  Available
2:  Capable of doing the work
3:  Suitable for the track, and
4:  Not needed for something else
