Need Arnold S-2 Wheel/Axle/Gear set
« on: September 25, 2012, 07:23:34 PM »

I have an older Arnold S-2, sold by Walthers back in the 90's, that has a broken gear on one of the axles. I know I can buy a replacement set from NWSL but, I'd rather go this route first. Anyone out there replaced their axles and have one of the originals they can part with? Please PM me if you have. Thanks.

In about 6-12 months you'll see a swath of Armold S-2's on the market.

You might try these guys in Germany:  http://www.arnold-ersatzteile.de/index.html
I have no idea whether they speak or understand English  :?,  but you could just try it.

I've tried inquiring about parts from them in my best German but never got any response at all.

All of my take-off parts are cracked, but I still have one NWSL set to install, so let me see if I can come up with an axle that the gear is still good.

Checked all my old ones.  They are all cracked.

In case you don't have the NWSL part number:

2679-6  21.95  40"/72 1.0mm axle geared wheelsets (4)

I know $22 plus shipping ain't exactly a "cheap" fix.

Thanks all.  Keeping my fingers crossed.  It should be quite obvious my last resort will be NWSL! LOL  Strange as it may seem, only one of the gears has cracked... actually completely broken away from the axle.  If all else fails, I may spring for the $22.  In the mean-time, I will be patient and hope for the best.

Get the axle sets!! I have ten of these things,EVERY SINGLE GEAR eventually cracked. You'll kill yourself hunting one down, and just end up changing them all anyway.Bet the other three are bad,you just don't know it.Also, the NWSL sets really make them run and look better.Don't get the smaller wheeltread sets, get the ones Max posted the number for, they're so small, you end up having contact issues.

YES... you want the "72" tread.  Thanks for pointing that out, Lou.

Max,the first set I got was the smaller set, they were SO tiny,I didn't even like the way they looked. Then,I was surprised to see that you had to bend the beejeepers out of the contacts to even get them to touch the wheels, definitely not a drop in.Stay away from them unless you're running code 40 or smaller rail...

NWSL also made a replacement gear only, as a somewhat less expensive alternative.

Dick, I will also check through all my engine part boxs and see if I have any, also will check with some friends.
All the ones I do have thats running are still in 100% condition.
Most times cracked gears are from storeing engines in hot attics or damp basements, all my engines have been stored in a controlled climent since the 60's.
The ones I have for parts were from other peoples collections.

Ernie, none of my locomotives have ever seen anything but storage on a shelf in my trainroom, not even in sunlight, and never even see more than a ten degree swing in temperature.I have eight of these Arnold  S2's running right now, have 6 or so more for parts, every single gear on them was cracked..
