I've emailed The Andersons directly to find more information and, hopefully, locate some technical drawings or photos of those tops. They have a peculiar coffin lid-like design with the walkways set seemingly high, or the dome height is curiously exaggerated. The photo hints (at least in my head) at paired operations, possibly drawbar connection.

Now I wonder if I'll be able to find the MT cars? I haven't seen them in a while.

As for where they operated... artistic license time.

Two things; the tops look different on the photo I have (dated 1975, which I will try to get to you).  They have the small extension but then a slight arched roof w/o the walkway looking thing.  Second, drawbared cars typically have the same road# (the whole point was count them as a single car).  I've seen this with airslides, flat cars and reefers.

When did the truck restrictions go into effect?

New cars built after 1966 were required to have roller bearing trucks, and solid journal trucks were banned from interchange service between 1980 and 1994 (depending on your source of information).

If you study the photo, it does appear that the car on the right does not have a distinct, separate road number (though it may be hand written) and the ACI label seems to have been blacked out as well, on the same car. It may simply be appearance and I may be mistaken, but the two cars may just have the one number featured on the left-hand car.

Either way, they weren't drawbared in the 60's.

I don't think the ACI label was blackened out. It appears to have been partially obfuscated by image compression artifacts. When the image is cleaned up a little, you can make out the ACI label better. The road number also looks to have suffered for the same image artifacts; notice how the other lettering on the same car is blurred.

The car on the right is AEX 132.  Neither ACI label was painted out.

An Andersons car that definitely went over the road



And my attempt to capture it, probably 20+ years ago.  Despite it not being up to todays standards it's one of those sentimental favorites I'll always keep.  The Andersons logo is made from part of the price sticker they used at the retail store.
