Rebranding MDC cars?

I don't have the whole story, so this is pure speculation. It looks like someone decided to buy a ton of old MDC cars, add Accumate couplers, paint the metal frames Mars Red and sell them for $13 retail.

I saw a few on eBay with a starting bid of $7:

Athearn had a "yard sale" to sell off their excess stock, returns etc just before they moved..I suspect these are some of those excess cars supped up with Accumates and truck screws..

They not bad looking cars.

Those aren't bad cars - and with the MDC trucks, they should be good for the runner trains .. I have a bunch of MDCs and am pretty happy with them .. his price isn't bad, considering they have newer trucks

The tooling isn't bad on those boxcars, and they sit at the proper height.  The smaller printing isn't up to current standards, but the larger graphics are passable.  Definitely worth a look to pick up any desired prototypes and paintschemes that were released and discontinued over a couple a decades ago, as Athearn to date hasn't brought them all back to market.

Yes these are essentially suped-up MDC cars. We make their open car loads under an OEM agreement.

I must have missed those.. I did manage to get all the Auto-Maxes they had for $3.00 each, with no trucks. But I don't remember seeing any MDC cars. I would have scooped up a bunch of the 50DD cars.
