Athearn PS-2 2600 2-bay Covered Hopper

Hi Gang,

I finally got around to taking some outdoor pix of this.  It's an HO scale Athearn PS-2 2600 rib side covered hopper, in CSXT re-stencil.  This is not based strictly upon a specific prototype, but I wanted to try out Tom's technique (http://therailwire.net/forum/index.php/topic,19590.0.html) of rusting using a thin layer of airbrushed-on Burnt Umber acrylic paint, sprayed on and then scrubbed off with a stiff brush & vertical strokes. I'm pretty pleased with the look, tho I used pretty thin paint so it created a really subtle streaking.  I think a thicker paint mix probably would have come out with that more strongly-defined "dry streaks" kind of look.

That's really fantastic work!  I kind of like both tags, mostly because the variation in quality bespeaks different taggers.  And the rust is fantastic.  Yet anothe reason to try more of Tom's techniques . . . .

The surface rust is fantastic.  I've got to give that technique a try; it looks like this would translate to N pretty well.

The rust on the trucks looks great too, but it has the appearance of a car that has been out of service for a while.  I would be inclined to apply a bit of road grime to them.  [But I'm just looking for something to nit-pick ]

How did you apply the wheel spray on the car ends?  I've tried that on N scale tank cars and it came out looking like cr@p (i.e. brushed-on streaks).

This one looks nice too.  Wheel spray is nicely done with good colorization.
