That is the HO car price is a big giveaway. Hopefully the N version isn't far off.  EXR has already done the NS Waffle in HO. Not as big a seller as the Southern's which sold out in an hour or two. Think that shocked them because they actually allowed pre-orders on the next Southern run which is due in a month or so.

I read the ad wrong.  Sure hope they do it in N.  You couldn't spit back in the 70's if you were near any tracks in the Northeast of South without hitting on of those.

Absolutely.

Those would probably replace a bunch of my Atlas Precision Design stand-ins.

They're like the Southern version of the X58.

I don't think they know just how popular those cars would be. I have purchased a few cars from ER, but not many due to the fact they were seldom seen up this way a decade ago. That Sou waffle though... I would need multiples in every paint scheme in Sou, NS, and CSX.

I'll take the CSX, NS and SOU - but also one or two of the shortlines as well...

The other amazing thing is how Athearn has sat on it's MDC waffle, which is close (though not exact) to the SBD/CSXT car of which there are tens of thousands....

I wonder if the tooling was damaged somehow. It is very strange that this car is the only one not to be run aside from that plug door abomination.

I wish Athearn would tool a new detailed underframe, brake wheel and steps for these cars. That would keep the tooling current for another 20 years.

Didn't someone say that Athearn practically denies there even is a waffleside?

Another oddity is that Athearn and Intermountain have these coal gons that are widely used for scrap hauling, but keep producing large sets in coal schemes and miss the opportunity to reuse the tooling for the scrap schemes.  I've sent info and photos to both to no avail.

The last I had heard was that they have the tooling intact but won't run it in fear of the "foobie" backlash because the car is a conglomeration of designs, not one specific prototype.

I picked up a dozen or so waffle bodies last fall on e-bay for $2 each. There was a guy that was blowing out the MDC part leftovers that Athearn sold off when they took over. Also picked up some wood caboose bodies, 50' overton parts and some of the shorty parts for cheap.

Actually I'm painting a bunch today....

Speaking of strange, MDC had the tooling for YEARS and never once ran it with CSXT reporting marks...  There were so many versions, paintouts, etc... they could have done.

Not with CSXT marks...

They did it with SBD marks - both CSX and CSX Transportation logo...  They also did the Seaboard System and SCL and several LN paint schemes...
