Placing single detectors at the ends of the siding will establish the direction of the train in question. If it hits the end before the middle, it's going one way, if it hits the middle before the end, well, you get the idea...What say you to that? Lee

The biggest hole is that there could be a situation where you don't know if a train is in the tunnel. Obviously there are ways to deal with that if need be.
