ConCor Hudson

I'm putting together a Milwaukee heavyweight passenger train using the new MT cars and a Con Cor Hudson I painted a while ago.
The model I have is the earliest Kato made release without tender pickup. It's not much of a performer and Spookshow's site confirms this as well.
Can this engine be made into a reliable performer or would I be better off to find one from the second release?
Suggestions?

It could be made better if you could find a pair of tender trucks from the later releases and hard-solder leads from their pickup plates to your motor, or better, find a whole tender from a later release so you have their excellent tender floor system with the bronze strips.  But those are rare by themselves.  I'm afraid you will be better off looking for a whole 1980s-era Kato-built engine.   Seek the ones that have tender pickups and the gray plastic siderods.  Those were the best.   When Kato and Con-Cor parted ways, and Con-Cor continued making the Hudson on their own, they were never as good.

The 1980s ones still hold up to today's running quality, even though the boiler details are crude by modern standards.

It has the old Sekisui motor.  (I know, Kato and Sekisui are the same- but it helps for clarity.

The second version has a better motor.

Chessiefan has one of the Kato ones.  You could try to PM him and see if he wants to part with it.

I'd also suggest doing a shell swap with one of the post-1975 Kato-made units. They're not that hard to find, and by the time you get yours fixed up with tender pickup and a better motor you'll probably have spent just as much anyway.

Cheers,
