What is this ?

A Most unique loco - Anyone know what it is called and who made it ?

It would make a neat kit-bash project, if enough info could be found.

Picture's kind of tiny, but it looks like a CF-7.

These were home-built by the Santa Fe, who converted their sizeable fleet of F units into these homely road switchers.  While they're all similar, there's a lot of variations, too.  So for a kitbash, make sure you're looking at a lot of reference photos.

The cab looks like a CF7, but the long hood looks too short. Robbman?

It's a heavily rebuilt and repowered (with a CAT prime mover) EMD SW-8, done by Republic Locomotive in Greeneville, SC.... they called it an RL1000

it's not the outside that matters - they start with whatever you give them, put in a CAt prime mover and ta-da

You're more correct than you may know. I regularly hear of them dying out on the road, and requiring additional units to rescue the dead one.
