Number boards

I mentioned the other day in the weekend update thread that I was working on the number boards on a couple of Kato sd70macs. The issue was that the boards that came with the models had white numbers on a black background while the prototype CSX engines have black numbers on white. I tried using adhesive mailing labels covered with transparent scotch tape, but I'm not 100% satisfied with the results. The problem is that when the boards are inserted into the sockets they're flush, so that the labels I made end up protruding in a pretty noticeable way.

So, are there other alternative methods for customizing number boards? I'm going to give Kato a call to see if they might have correct boards in stock, but in case they don't, I'd be interested in knowing what other methods are out there. Thanks.

I print black toner onto either clear or white decal film.  Works like a charm and does not need sealing or a tape layer.

What's your preferred brand of decal paper? I've been shopping around and it's all a little pricey, so I want to make sure I get the right kind.

I have the Micromark, just because my LHS sold some but I suspect any avaible would do for this particular job as it is thin enough for this task.  If you want white letters, I lay down a small rectangle of white decal film first, and then print the black onto clear with the numbers clear.  It means there is no tricky cutting of the decal to get a perfect shape.
