Thought you guys would find this interesting.  I haven't seen any mention of this in my many D&RGW sources, but I noticed from looking at photos of Rio Grande's 3700 class 4-6-6-4s that some time in late December 1941/early 1942 the visibility painting on the front changed from this:


to this:


My thought is that this was done after Japan attacked the US at Pearl Harbor.  Wouldn't be good PR to have a "Rising Sun" on the front of your locomotives at that point.
