Container Crane

Guys,

I thought I'd share a photo of a custom model I just finished for a customer. He is a container crane operator and wanted an N Scale model of a container crane to display in his office.

If there is sufficient interest, I might make this available as a kit.

Great looking model.  I'd love a kit of something like that.  However, I'm sure the price would put it out of reach of more than a handful, not to mention its size.  I'd certainly be in if the price was right though.

Very nice!  I don't believe I have a need for one (yet), but I know of a few folks who would almost certainly buy.

I don't think that exact design was used in the 1950's , especially around Green River Wyoming .

As I thought, so  I think you mean it post-dates your era?  In any case, it was just a lame attempt at humor on my part.  ;)

Well almost...  the first A frame container crane was installed in Alameda, Ca in 1959.

See http://www.asme.org/Communities/History/Landmarks/PACECO_Container_Crane_1959.cfm

This model is based on a Paceco Crane that was installed in Baltimore in 1966 and is still there. These suckers have been around awhile.

The paint job on the model is based on the NYCT, where the buyer worked.  They have a cool web site at:

Bernie, which one of the b'more ports is that located at?

Last time I looked it was at Sea Girt terminal on the west end, near the old PRR grain elevator. They use it to load  container barges. Most current container ships at Sea Girt use the bigger blue cranes. One of the Port of Baltimore folks told me they were trying to sell it, but I think it is still there. Live maps shows it there after the GM plant was removed. It has been painted black. I have the 1969 copy of Jane's Freight Containers and it shows it there and says it was built in 1966.

I got a guided tour of the Sea Girt terminal a few years ago in preparation to bid on a custom model for the B&O museum. I never got the job, but they did give me a great tour of the facilities.  If Dave K Smith remembers, this was the job where I asked him to animate the cranes.

The museum opted for a more generic depiction of Balmer that was done by CMR.  They asked me to do a bid for a full size (ie no selective compression) N scale model of Sea Girt Terminal. it would have been a cool model if they went for it.

Thanks.

It can move along the pier, so look around. I have not been up there for a year or so, so I'm not sure it's still there.

I looked again at Live maps and in one view it is definitely gone. They even removed the elevated electric line that ran along side it. Another fallen flag, kind-a, sort-of    ??? :(
