Whoa. Those are cool. What's the deal with the prototype? Designed to fit 40' loading racks? Designed for carrying mercury?
These tankcars are designed for corn syrup. Actually, half-a-load of corn syrup for smaller customers who did not want a full 100-ton car. Tankcars designed for 100-tons of corn syrup typically had capacities of around 16,800 gal to 17,600 gal. The new Athearn car is a North American 8,700 gal design. To my knowledge, all cars of this design rode on 50 ton or 70 ton trucks...I have yet to see a prototype with 100 ton trucks.FWIW, I have seen other tankcar builder's beercan type designs in petro service...but I have yet to see any evidence of these NACC 8K gal cars being used in anything other than corn syrup service. I would love to see evidence otherwise though.Best Regards,Tim Frederick
