McHenry Couplers

The N scale Mchenry couplers were on exhibit at the WGH show. At the breakfast Sunday morning, Athearn announced that anyone from the convention could pick up a free pair.  I was leaving right after the breakfast, dammit. Why couldn't they have given them out when us N scalers had the WGH all to ourselves Saturday morning?

The McHenry's in HO have had mixed reviews, but so has everything but the Kadee #57. I love the Kadee ad asking "how many other couplers will you break before you use Kadee's?" Kinda sums it up. At first glance, the McHenry shank looks at little longish, ala AccuMate(for sharp radii, I know). I'll be glad to give the McHenry a fair trial, like the AccuMates, before making any judgements. We'll see how they work in long trains.

I got a pair of the free couplers at the convention.  They easily replace the accumates, operate fine and look good.  I put one of the couplers in an atlas tank car that has had problems with uncoupling.  The McHenry fared no better as it promtly uncoupled as well.  I'm not really sure how they are an improvement over the accumates.
