What to see in San Francisco?

I'm going to the SF Bay area (Santa Clara) the week of June 15th, as I've never been there before, what should I go see, railroad-related, that is?

I want to try (riding and/or 'fanning) at least one of the following:

  • Niles Canyon Railway
  • Sierra Railroad
  • Roaring Camp & Big Trees
  • BART
  • Peninsula Commuter Trains
  • Donner Pass
  • Keddie Wye
  • Western Railway Museum
  • California State Railroad Museum

What else should I know of? Is there anything near Yosemite, as my family plans on going there, too. :D

Catch the ferry across to Sausalito and see if you can hook up with this character:  ;D

Yosemite is a must. Rent a mountain bike and ride across the Golden Gate. Ride a cable car too.

Since it is after Memorial Day, Muni should be operating the historic streetcars on the Embarcadero and along Market Street. You can visit a number of cities around the country (or at least ride their streetcars). By all means ride a cable car and visit the carhouse/powerhouse/museum where you can see how the cable is powered.

I've really gotten a feeling that FRTS is the place to go in the SF Bay area, I wonder why? :D

And then, I guess, both the Muni and the cable cars?

Agreed, especially Yosemite. Also:

Muir Woods

Point Lobos State Park

Have dinner in Monterey
