Since I want to do operating marker lamps, I need to know how to attach fiber optics to LEDs.

Iain,

Not N, but take a look at this link - http://www.ngineering.com/Nano_white_photos.htm. No fiber optics required. He did it using Ngineering's nano LEDs.
Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.

If permanently attaching the strands to the LED is ok; you can drill holes in the LED face.  CA them in place, and you've got great light transmission.  It's a big help to have flat top LEDs, but possible with standard cases.

I drill about .010" to 0.020" deep in the face, dip the strand in CA, insert, and wait for it to cure.
Black everything out, and install.

I don't have pictures of the process, but here is one of a proof-of-concept model using the method.  (didn't care about this one, so it isn't blacked out.)

You can possibly also use heat shrink tubing, especially if its more than 1 fiber per LED. Use a size just big enough to slip over the LED and bundle up your fiber optics then shrink in place. A bit less permanent than ACCing them in place, makes replacing easier if needed. If using just 1 then use an extra bit of smaller tubing around the fiber optic.
