Atlas H16-44 shipped

The latest Atlas H16-44 have shipped.  I just received the Southern units and they look sharp (to my untrained non-rivet counting eyes of course).
As my railroad is currently in "benchwork rebuilding" stage, I haven' been able to run them yet, so leaving it to others to comment, but I believe the only difference with the previous model is the decoder in the DCC unit.

Digging up this old bone.

I've come into possession of one of these, and it has a bad universal, causing one truck to slip while the other struggles to propel the engine.
The design of the universal is terribly finicky.  The little eyelet that is supposed to transfer torque from the flywheel to the worm is awfully fragile.
I've fiddled with it but am ready to give up.
Any tricks or tips to getting this thing to run reliably?

I also have an SD24 that suffers the same malady, but I haven't yet taken it apart to diagnose.  Both share the same universal design.  It's the "male universal" bit that appears to be the problem.  Part 540104, which naturally isn't available.  Looks like this  -o-  very tiny plastic bit.  It doesn't take much to shear off one of the - bits.

Talk to me.

There were numerous complaints about this malfunction.  There is no consistency to it.  I have thee that never have shown this problem.  I have had two that did.  I sold them as junque.

I seem to recall reading that Atlas had the original manufactured in South Korea by Ajin.  If the subsequent runs were of Chinese manufacture, it did not fix the problem.  It is a shame, because a FM road switcher is important to have in N scale.

I like the B-mann's much better (except for the incorrect coupler height).  The B-mann is a later phase.  B&O had both.

Hi Lee   I cannot help you on where to locate the 3d printed parts but if you can find a factory replacement one (or super glue the old one together) drill out the hole with a #53 bit.  I have quite a few of these engines & found that even the last run of replacement parts split after a few months.  Enlarging the hole slightly has so far been successful (knock on wood).  Considering how many different engines use this design I really wish they would do a run of replacement parts.

You're thinking of the VO-1000.

On my Atlas locomotives (And other brands) that have split shaft connectors I use a drop of E6000
So far, this has worked extremely well.
