I know there must be some out there (preferably free) where you can build a layout diagram by putting pieces of track together to make a layout. Suggestions?

I've been using AnyRail. The demo allows 50 sections of track. The demo is free. There is library of track including Kato. The paid version allow unlimited track sections.

XtrkCAD is free, has Kato library (as well as Atlas and Tomix), and I believe has no limitations on track sections.

For anyone using a Mac, look at the Railmodeler application. The free Express version can handle 50 track segments. The paid Pro version is quite extensive. Both have a full Kato Unitrack library.

How do I get to the track library on Windows? I don't see an option on the menu.

OldEastRR have you selected a software program to use? If you download and install AnyRail, the library is along the top menu bar. Select the tracks you wish to use, and make your track plan. This track plan can be printed out. I printed some of mine full sized, to aid in track laying.
