Max, I absolutely agree that using snipped coils out of a phosphor bronze spring would be ideal.  Not only they will retain shape in handling, that material is easily soldered.

Thank you for your suggestion Max; if I can find a spring coil or two roughly 36" in diameter I will give that a try.

Another option may be to get parts for it etched as I also need some intake screens and a Morton running board.

Etched parts are flat, so they will not look as realistic as if they were made from wire.  But it is an option.
