Has anyone built the John Armstrong Gulf Summit & Susquehanna Valley Railroad (GS & SV) in Z scale? I've done a few searches but not found anything.
Thx

Thought that sounded familiar.   I helped a buddy do it in N and I helped him build it.    Had some nice features to it on the yard, industries.    The only thing I didn't like was that the one 'left' end over/under ramp was just too steep to be practical, it was a fatal design flaw in my opinion.   I think that grade was like 4-5%

It was made for Atlas bridges and piers, if you could minimize that clearance it would help.

If you have the room to build it to N scale dimensions, but in Z scale, vertical clearances will be less, and so will the grades.

Not true, as a percent, the grades will be constant unless it is built on the same size table as the N scale version.   If it is built on the original dimensions of the N, true.

That was my favorite track plan though of the old Atlas 'track plans' in N that everybody had.   It was fun to actually see it take shape.  My friend had all AG1 equipment to go with it, too.

Thanks for your replies and feedback. This was one of my favorite plans from way back. I've become a big fan of Armstrong's designs since then.

If building this layout in Z scale on a 4 x 8 size (or perhaps 3 x 8), the track plan could be spread out so it's not so cramped. The yard could be expanded and the steep grades could be reduced to the 2 - 3% range. Might also allow for a little more realistic scenery.

Just researching the idea now. There are several N scale builds shown on-line, but I haven't found an example in Z scale.

Thanks
