Kato SD40 with Lok V5 kato replacement board

Hey,
     Another sound install that was pretty easy.
DCC ready frame, was able to use Lok Sound V5 58741
Front and rear headlights are pre-wired 603 smd LED's
Soberton 8mm x 12mm speaker in a Keystone details enclosure.

    I just had to do a little milling on the rear to allow for the height of the speaker/enclosure. Over all,,went pretty smooth. Sound file loaded quickly, 26 minutes. File used S0710 16 cylinder 645E3 prime mover.

That looks painless!  Think this will work similar for a (Kato) SD40-2?

That does look like an easy install.  Well, the plug-n-play decoder sure makes this possible.

I'm curious why you decided to hard-wire the motor instead of using the original Kato metal contacts that the decoder was designed for?

Pete,
    I think a hard wire connection is better, why rely on a pressure contact when you can make a hard connection?
Plus I did not feel like messing with the tabs.

Thanks for the explanation.  Sounds reasonable
Looks like we belong to different schools of thoughts.  To me anything that is hard-wired makes future servicing more difficult.  I prefer using solderless connections whenever possible (without sacrificing reliability). Kato has been using those motor contacts for quite some time, and they seem to be quite reliable.  If I do a similar install, I'll likely use those original contacts.

    I hear ya,, you make excellent points,, but you know a hat could cover those up!! I understand about the maintenance issue. It could be I just like using my Hakko rig. Lol
