One Rail Australia (formally G & W Australia) operates a narrow gauge 3'6" gauge network on behalf of Liberty Steel and Simec Mining in Whyalla, South Australia. The magnetite ore for the steel works is brought in as slurry via a pipeline while most of the hematite from the mines goes for export. However, a small amount of hematite lump ore is still required for the steel making process and the railway retains one rake of older RSK hoppers for this, seen in this image, some dating back to the late 1920s.

ORA operates a rag tag fleet of EMD rebuilds as motive power, along with the odd Alco. 2275 leading this train away from Whyalla, on Sunday 13 March 2022, was one of a small class of 8 locos built for Queensland Rail (QR) in 1973 by Clyde Engineering in Queensland with a V16 645E EMD engine. In 2005 it was rebuilt and re-engined with an EMD  V12 645E3C power unit. After a number of years running coal trains it, along with others, was sold in 2014 to interests in South Africa. It was never used there and was repatriated along with four others in 2019 and purchased by One Rail.

The second unit is one of original EMD G12 export models delivered to the railway when dieselised in the 1950s, later rebuilt by Morrsion Knudsen Australia in 1994.

I tot I saw a puddy tat! For those of you who lost your favorites to The Borg, look away now. But I couldn’t believe it when I caught a glimpse of that weird yellow color while walking back to my office and the local being parked while switching out my place of work. I’m very surprised and also not shocked that this has survived this long.

I’m glad to see that kitty, Sawyer, because once they’re gone, they’re gone.
