So did Boston & Maine RR (um, Pan Am Railways)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston-Maine_Airways

I also have a vague recollection of reading somewhere that B&M railways also operated a small fleet of aircraft (serving Cape Cod?) in the '40s or '50s, but I can't find any references to that.

In 1933, Boston and Maine Railroad again formed a Boston-Maine Airways subsidiary, which started service on August 11, 1933 ...
The carrier's early flights were operated under contract by National Airways ...
In 1937, Boston and Maine purchased National Airways' assets, and in November 1940, renamed it Northeast Airlines.
In August 1944, Northeast acquired small Mayflower Airlines and began service to Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts.

I searched for  Boston & Maine Airways but came up empty.

Northeast Airlines.   Thanks Point353!  So it was earlier than I expected, but at least I remembered the Cape Cod destination.

Trans-Canada Airlines was a subsidiary of Canadian National Railway. Later became Air Canada, separated from CN as a independent crown corporation, and eventually privatized.

And absorbed Canadian Airlines, which was a successor to CP Air/Canadian Pacific Airlines.

I recall in the late 80s seeing a flier or advertisement for Burlington Air Express that had a BN Railroad Logo, which I thought was odd (this was at the Battle Creek, MI Airport)..

Canadian Pacific bought a collection of bush airlines in 1942, presumably to ensure their passengers could reach a wider selection of (non rail served) destinations. CP Airlines grew into a reasonably large airline with an emphasis on trans Pacific routes. The fleet included 707’s 737’s and 747’s in its later days. It was a fully integrated part of the “The Worlds Greatest Travel system”, which also included steamships and ocean liners with both trans Atlantic and Pacific routes. You could get from London England to Yokohama Japan with leaving comfort of your CP accommodation. An airplane (looks like a DC3 or such) appears on their “Spans the World” boxcar logo of the late 40’s.
