I felt these would never be run again because they were used for such a short time.

The Simplot cars lasted over 30 edit: 20 years... I remember seeing them spotted at the fry plants on my last trip home to Manitoba.

Great to see the cryogenic reefers with real couplers!!! Sorry, they'll always be potato reefers to me. Well, maybe salad, Teddy Salad.  ;)

Problem. They're really not practical. I mean, if I'm lucky, maybe I can fit about 20 green peas inside. How is this practical? C'mon Atlas!!  :( ;)

Honestly, I'm not sure if I have 'ever' an actual Cryo-Reefer like the Walther model.

The story I heard is that they were rebuilt into conventional reefers with the open end platform AC unit.. and that became the design base for the next generation of reefers to replace the 57' cars.

Indeed, at least some of these cars were fitted with external reefer units:

(login might be required).  If the BLMA reefer units are still available, the rest of the retrofit would make a cool 3d printing project.  :)

There is a new generation of CRYX reefers now that are showing up in big numbers on BNSF manifests across Tehachapi (and elsewhere):

CryoTrans also has a series of 72' insulated cars (RBLs) which look like these cryo models. RBN railroad is getting these cars regularly with I believe wine.

BTW CryoTrans recently was bought by Lineage Logistics.

Not a thing I can use, except for the GP-7. But it’s in the wrong scale... :P

Well, it looks like Mr Wallet is safe from any expenditures from this current Atlas catalog. The covered grain hoppers were interesting, but I’ve got plenty of those already.

Now, if they’d just deliver the items I’ve already pre-ordered a long time ago… like maybe before my early stage cataracts progress to the point where I can’t read the printing.

Man, I was at the dentist when I got the email for SD50/60s with Ditch Lights and got excited.

Now I see the SP are just like the original run, without ditch lights, which they had them in Speed Lettering, and into full UP repaint.

SP 5504 had them in 2000

SP 5511 had them in 1999

SP 5517 had ditch lights in 1992 (Brand New repaint at the time too, so means it came out with ditch lights, which could most likely be the consensus with all the SP/DRGW Speed Lettered SD50s)

I guess Atlas is saving me some money, as they aren't even listing undec versions for a SD50 with ditch lights.

Chris

Atlas must have changed their minds on the SP units. Now all three are listed with ditch lights and $10 more MSRP.

40 005 192 Southern Pacific 5504 (Gray/Red) (w/ ditch lights) $154.95
40 005 193 Southern Pacific 5511 (Gray/Red) (w/ ditch lights) $154.95
40 005 194 Southern Pacific 5517 (Gray/Red) (w/ ditch lights) $154.95
