Old(er) "Alco" brand RSD4/5...

I just scored an example off eBay; here is a picture from that site:

The bottom of the trucks are labeled "KTM", and one of the trucks has some bad gears.

Can anyone here tell me something about these models and what to look for when it arrives?

"KTM" is the abbreviation for "Katsumi," but it looks more like a Kumata model (which would be KMT). Probably a Hallmark import (apparently I can't read),so expect to have to do some work to get it running well or quietly. The motor will probably be very weak with age, and if it has all brass gearing, it will be loud (and if it has plastic gears, expect them to be cracked).

I concur with what Christian has said as well. That motor was used quite a bit by Alco Models and they didn't age well at all!!!
According to the Brown Book of brass locomotives by John Glaab this was imported by Alco Models and built by Kumata Models.
There were to production dates of these both with a catalog # D-121. The first run was in 1972 with 500 produced at a list price of
$70.00 and an average value of $110.00 (keep in mind this is from a 1994 book!!!).

The second production run was produced in 1977 with only 200 built at a list price of $130.00
The only thing of note is Railroad Modeler did a review on the 1977 run in January 1978.

Got this thing running pretty well; better, actually, than I'd dare hope.

Used "Barkeeper's Friend" to clean up the body. Before:
