$590 for a DDA40X w/sound, $420 without? That's insane. Street prices?

Well, no wonder, it includes air raid sirens....

Athearn has upgraded the Genesis DDA40X to Genesis 2.0 standards and will be offering them in several versions including — for the first time — one of the two air raid siren-equipped versions.
OK UP guys....why air raid sirens?  Or is that slang for some sort of oddball horn?

That thing will end up ruining a lot of marriages.  First the spouse has to put up with the remodeling of the house necessary to double the radii of all the curves on the layout.  THEN there will be air raid sirens going off any time the operators have more than 2 beers.

I have a mind like a steel trap...a VERY rusty, old steel trap.

UP 6918 and 6924 received the sirens in 1979, removed from UP SDP35s 1400 and 1402.

It was for real, Chris has the same link I was about to post. This was a test program for something that would get more attention than the usual train horns, the extra audio intended for MOW crews and other lineside workers. 6918 was retired in 1982 with the siren intact. The program ended roughly about that time.
