So everyone wants my pole to be erect by using a tub of Vaseline to help it stand up and prevent it from getting sticky. It either that or put on a jacket of stretchy film to protect everything from getting sticky.

Vaseline might work, but sounds messy and tricky to work with.  (eyohh)

Styrene square tube would be better, with the added benefit that you can use the next size smaller square tube to make insert 'plugs' to further disguise the holes if necessary. 

My removable overpass is done this way.

The empty holes could easily be disguised with plugs having a scenic top.
