We were asking them if he needed to finish it as part of the challenge. They let it slide. Which was a shame, because I was DEFINITELY looking forward to him doing a ketchup shooter.

Wouldn't have been the first time. Back when I won the Road Hawg contest, I slammed most of the personal-sized bottle of bbq sauce after finishing to intimidate whoever was trying to claim second place...

I got my NW5 finished up, kind of.  Decoder installed and new power pickup.   I ended up running some magnet wire under the frame to help with those crappy pickups too.

Got it all put together, and damn, it's loud. grind grind.  I've found that with other random LL SW units too.  Maybe the gears are off just enough.  In any case, it looks good though  :D

Grinding often indicates that the worm wheel (gear) is not fully meshing with the worm.  Is it possible that the truck is sitting too low, so its top gear barely meshes with the worm?

More HO Diversions with an Atlas Boxcar, AK Interactive paints, Dullcote, and Bragdon weathering powders.

Went for the look of a car near the end of its life that isn't yet a bad ordered rust bucket.

yeah, that was my guess. I'm using GP trucks, so maybe they don't quite line up.  It's hard to see in there, and what a pain that the shell is the contact point for power.  I need some very micro alligator clips.
