The Variable Density Tunnel (VDT) on a rail car at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company where it was built. The Tunnel was shipped by barge to the Langley Memorial Laboratory in June 1922. The VDT was designed by Dr. Max Munk and it leap-frogged wind tunnel technology of the time putting Langley Lab and the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) at the forefront of aeronautical research in the 1920s.

The weekly Ghan service from Adelaide to Darwin, takes around 54 hours for the 1,851 mile journey. The Ghan is operated by private company Great Southern Rail which sources 'hook and pull' locomotives and crewing from freight operator Pacific National (PN). Three of PN's NR class locos (GE -9s) have carried a special Ghan livery for several years now and two are usually rostered on the train. On 24 February 2019, NR109/NR75 are doing the honours at Coonamia near Port Pirie, South Australia.
