Rapido Proto-Paint Pros Cons

Looking for some user input for Rapido's Proto-Paint.  My stash of True-Line Trains acrylics is about to run out and I need a viable alternative.  Your thoughts, please......

Hi Doug

I have had very had very good luck with it. It sprays right out of the bottle and dries to a nice gloss coat that will accept decals without silvering. I have only used a few of their browns for painting boxcars and the colors are spot on for those. I can’t speak on how close their BC Rail colors are to the real thing.

Thanks for the info Chris.  I was beginning to think no one had ever heard of the stuff judging from the lack of responses.  The fact that it dries glossy is a real plus.  I really don't like spraying on a gloss coat and then a dull coat to hide the gloss.  As log as you can apply decals over it with no issues, it sounds like a good deal.  Does Central carry it?

Yup, Rapido's paint line has become my new go-to for railway specific colours. It goes on easily, is airbrush ready (though can also be thinned with distilled water if need be), and cleanup is a snap.

You should find it to be equivalent or superior to TLT and/or George's paint lines.

As a side note, Vallejo has become my favoured paint line for non railway specific colours. There are equivalents for all the basics that would have been covered by polly scale (earth, dirt, rail & tie browns, engine, grimy and oil blacks, rust, mud, reefer white and yellow, ...). They have both brush and airbrush ready formulations that work very well.
Because why not...
