You don't necessarily need a between-the-rails uncoupler. I used these with good results:

As for uncoupling without a magnet, the most popular approach is a plastic mini-screwdriver, the kind often used to adjust pots:

I've used an everyday toothpick as an uncoupler.  With Microtrains couplers, you just put it in-between couplers and twist.  Done.

Bamboo skewers work well as uncoupleres, and are cheap and plentiful. Toothpicks works but are relatively short, Skewers are longer and easier to work with.

But if you've operated on other layouts where people are always looking for the dang uncoupler tool (whatever it is), these have a nice place to live and hang, on a cheap brass hoop screwed into he fascia at key locations...

Are the Rix tools made of a harder plastic than they used to be? The old white ones got dull fairly quickly and then they are more difficult to get into the space between the knuckles.

Kaydee used to make an electro magnetic uncoupler for N scale. Not sure if it made anymore, but if you only need a few, ebay might work.
