Dear Modeler:

We have added 100 more decals to the website for a total of 400 available in all scales.

Walthers does not stock all decals, if you want to get them through Walthers you must backorder them. We and many dealers such as PF&S, M.B. Klein and Des Plaines Hobby have them in stock.

Here is a list of our new decals. All decals are available in all scales and in 6 packs. Numbers below are HO. Add N for N scale, S for S scale and O for O scale. Add a -6 for a six pack. Single decals are: HO $4, N $4, S $5, O $6. Six Pack decals are: HO $20, N $20, S $25, O $30. Please note decals followed by an asterisk (*) have a somewhat higher price, see website for details. All decals are in stock.

Search procedure for the website (we have added a new category for data sets in all scales) and installation instructions are at the end of this email.

In celebration of reaching 400 decals we are having a 20% off on decal sales. Just use   DECAL   in the coupon box at checkout. Good to 5/31.

Here is the procedure to locate decals on the website:

Click the SHOP tab on the home page.
Click on the SCALE you want.
Click on the DECALS tab.
Click on either RAILROAD, PRIVATE OWNER, CAR TYPE or DATA.
Select the RAILROAD, OWNER or CAR TYPE you want.
Under HO decals, you can also search by our KIT NUMBER.

Please note that under the description we have added the year the car was built. Please note this is a general guide, some of the paint schemes might have been applied to the cars later.

Due to the problems some of you are having with adhesion of logos and other large decal areas, we have changed our recommended application procedure. Float the decal off the backing paper and blot dry with a paper towel. Use a Q-Tip to apply a thin coat of Elmer's clear glue to the back side. Position the decal with tweezers and press in place with a piece of stiff flexible foam (foam from a brass model box works great). Let dry overnight and over spray with clear lacquer (glosscote or dullcote).

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Donald Tichy

Some of Tichy's decal sets go for $4, great. But some are retailed at $20 or $25? Seems a bit steep, no?

Just from a quick look, I'm just seeing 1 set = $4 and 6 sets = $20 kind of things.

Not a big fan of these. The ink is so thick you can feel it with your fingertip.  No way that can be hidden or leveled out with even multiple layers of clear lacquer. And now they recommend special application technique too?  :|

The N&W hopper decal artwork is well ... lousy.

Some are decent, though as Peteski mentioned the lettering has a "profile" or "elevation".

How thick are they? Are we talking Archer engravement thick?

Probably the same stuff they use on their printed street signs.

The printing is thick on my custom sets.  On the other hand, I've been reweighing Intermountain boxcars recently, and some of their factory lettering is also noticeably raised.

I'd very much like thinner lettering, but if the choice is these or no decals, for a given car, these do work.  And, in the larger scales, I doubt that it's as noticeable.

For the "special instructions", I haven't had any problem getting the decals to stick to the cars.  A few coats of Solvaset and they stay fine.  My problem is getting the film to stay on the paper until I want it to come off.  I think they got a batch with too little glue, and when small pieces are cut out, such as N scale reweigh dates, the film falls off.

I made good experiences with a wet sponge instead of having the decals just swim in plane water. I use a small plastic container with a custom cut sponge in it (some cheap cleaning sponge) and keep that sponge wet and just lay the decal paper on the sponge to get the film off. This way the decal film will stay on the paper until you are ready to apply it to the model. Hope this helps.

Yes, they are. They seem to be using a printer similar (or the same) as Archer. It seems to be an inkjet using thick UV-curable  inks.  Nkalanga sent me a sample of his Tichy custom-printed decals and I can read them like a Braille book. I was going to post some info about them, but that project (like the other dozen of my projects) got sidetracked.  IIRC, the ink thickness is 0.002" or 0.003".  I have to find them and measure them again.

If you are thinking of using Tichy for making custom rivet and panel line decals designed to be applied directly to the model then that woudl be an excellent idea!   :D
