70s and 80s tank cars

I was recently helping my friend find some tank cars good for 1980 and I realized that there's still a pretty big hole there.

What's out there?

Atlas:

GATX 20700 Gal. (Gen. Svc.)
ACF 33,000 Gal. (Pressure)
ACF 23,500 Gal. (Gen Svc.)
ACF Kaolin Tanks
ACF 17,360 Gal. (Pressure)
ACF 11,000 Gal. (Pressure) - late 1940s-50s prototype that would still be within service age in the 1970s-early 1980s.

Athearn:

RTC 20,900 Gal. - ex-MDC car
GATX TankTrain

Of course the usual caveats of watching out for later-era repaints applies...

The Micro-Trains 56' tank car is also a 1960s-70s design although I can't place it's prototype, if any. It might be a generic blend. The angled tank saddles actually look a bit like a Canadian DOSCO/Hawker-Siddeley...

Yeah, those are some good ones, but they're generally mid-80s+, right?

Or is it just an issue of paint schemes.

Also, weren't there many other types of cars around in that era? Like, I can picture 50' cars with frames/walkways like the Atlas 11k car. They were pretty common, right?

I don't see the Kaolin tanks in pics (in my area!)in 1980, but by say, 84, they were everywhere. That's not to say they were not out there, but I'd say mid 80s for most of those, or later..

According to this it's an ACF car from 1974:

I found a more detailed analysis of this car a while back (I think it was RMJ) but I am not at home currently. From memory the car also resemble earlier (late 60s) and somewhat later cars.

The model needs lowering. 8)

I suggested tank cars to Bluford in the past. It would be nice to see them do tank cars like the hoppers.

The Atlas beercan cars were still out and about then.
There's a shyness found in reason
Apprehensive influence swallow away
You seem to feel abysmal take it
Then you're careful grace for sure
Kinda like the way you're breathing
Kinda like the way you keep looking away

Yeah. They're not horrible, and do decently with some dress up. But it'd be nice to see more common cars.

Ed, do you have any proto photo examples of what you want? There was a great two part article in NSM in its early years on tank car kitbashes, but IIRC they're more specific to late 60s - 70s.
Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.

That'd be handy, wouldn't it...

I have the articles digitized and can dig them up and send them your way if you'd like.
