Bennett Levin is one of those well-connected people.

Unfortunately, it seems not even that can help.  Posted on Facebook not long ago...

Yeah, this is sad. It's also a "last minute" cancellation. The convention is very soon.

Here's a Clerihew about Ed. K.

Ed Kapucinski
Every night, he plants a new tree.
But mention his law
and you've pulled your last straw!

Alternate version:
Ed Kapucinski
Every night, he plants a new tree.
He asks excitedly "Did you say Ménage à Trois?"
No, I said "Ed's Law."

Considering how much money has been put into the Washington DC subway system, and it still can't support itself, much less turn a profit, all I can say is that the government just decides to support some things beyond all reason and screw others beyond all reason.  If it were not for the subsidies of the airlines and highways, passenger trains would still be a major transportation option.  Just think what it could be like if there were "autotrains" going practically everywhere, charging airline-like prices with rent-a-car type prices thrown in on top for the ability to take your own car, packed to the roof with all of that vacation stuff you can't take on a plane.

Modeling the C&O in Kentucky.

“Nature does not know extinction; all it knows is transformation. ... Everything science has taught me-and continues to teach me-strengthens my belief in the continuity of our spiritual existence after death. Nothing disappears without a trace.” Wernher von Braun

Well, this completely blows.

Please forgive my ignorance here but why does Amtrak have any say regarding what happens on a railroad owned by another company?  If BNSF says it's ok, how/why does Amtrak even figure into it? :?  If Amtrak is worried about safety issues, maybe they should get their own house in order before going after others who, especially in this case, have spotless safety records.

My understanding is that Amtrak provides the insurance the excursions need.  No insurance. No running.
