They can save a lot of their shipping and material cost if they use the appropriate sized packaging.

They charge enough for shipping, it wont matter to them.

That's my point.  If they use the right packaging they won't have to charge that much for shipping, making it more attractive for smaller orders and more business.  Unless they are using shipping as another profit center like some companies do.

$4.99 is cheap for that package- even the larger box is $4.99 to the customer as compared to a small flat rate USPS at $7+.

And, most of their costs associated with shipping and packaging come from reprints  and refunds of parts that have been badly packed inside even those boxes.  Just ask me how I know.  I'd hate to see what wold happen to my prints if smaller packaging were used.

I have only seen two sizes of boxes (so far) regardless of the print size.  This likely keeps their box and packaging inventory at a minimum, and keeps the decision on which size package to use out of the packers hands (believe me, this is a good thing).

Besides, those smaller boxes come in handy if you have to ship something.  I re-use them and the bubble bags all the time.

Well, if they are only charging $4.99 for sending those boxes, then pack away!     (I had no idea how much was shipping.)

Yeah, with Shapeways it isn't the cost, but the hilarity of the size for what is in there.  Yes, I understand about not wanting the items, which can be very delicate, to be damaged. It is still funny.

$15 for international is not cheap.

I've received that box pretty full, like two of my K4 kits: 6 FED prints, two FUD prints, two stainless prints, and two BSF kits.

@JanesCustomTrain , no one had mentioned international up to now, so not assuming where folks are from, I was thinking domestic.

I just had decals in a flat envelope from AU cost just under $25.

I received some ditch light housings from Shapeways the other day. They could have put in 100 of what I got and still had room for packing. LOL
Anyway I took some photos of getting the lights installed into an atlas GP40 unit.
Boy these housings are small! There is one on the floor someplace never to be found again.
These look just like the ones that Rick had gotten.
Any way here are the photos
