Hey,

Does anyone know if Herpa produced the "short" cab as shown (in yellow) on the back of this box?

Thanks!

Mark

Looks like the product photo is the HO model...
I've never seen a N scale version...

I've never seen the Stevens trailer in N scale either.

Both of the models in the photos are HO.  The wheels look much better than any Con-Cor or Herpa has offered in N scale.   :(

All are correct. Those are the HO models and not the n scale versions. These were never offered in N.

But... That's only part of the story.

There was supposed to be a suicide can version of the freightliner, and a day cab version of the Kenworth. With the Freightliner, you can see that the original solid windshield insert stops exactly where it would if fitted into a day cab. Also note that the revised (hollow) tooling would include a rear window area that would not be needed with the sleeper.

In fact, there may have been plans for several Kenworth cab configurations: the cab itself has a read window hidden by the sleeper. There was an error in tooling the sleeper: the bolt pattern was cast behind the cab wall, rather than the back of the sleeper. I believe there was also supposed to be an "overnight" sleeper without the Aerodine vestibule. This would have been consistent with the HO line.

Too bad that Herpa/CC didn't finish the line. It would have opened up a lot of opportunities for modeling. Although the frames and wheels are trash, the cabs can be salvaged pretty easily and look great on Trainworx chassis.

The day cab Freightliner is an easy kitbash:  Cut the back off, clear of the window casting, and glue a new back on. although you may have to add some styrene to the frame to hold the shortened cab in place.  I've done that.  The bigger issue is that the fuel tanks stick out too far, which requires cutting the frame, and remounting the tanks.  The problem is that the frame is too wide, but simply narrowing the part between the wheels and the cab isn't difficult.

The "suicide cab" Kenworth is even easier:  Take the sleeper off!  I've converted a bunch to straight-top sleepers by cutting the tops off and putting new roofs on them, so that isn't hard either.

On both, removing the rear fenders helps "Americanize" them, but I have seen a few tractors with such fenders.  Most were pulling tanks, but a few were in general service.  Apparently they were available as an option in North America.

These definitely show their age, but they're really not bad models, especially if you can find them on sale.

Showcase Miniatures makes a kit that closely resembles the Stevens' cab
