I missed following up on this thread.
ATCS has been around a long time and at least for Union Pacific in my area (Northern California) the PTC equipment is on its own.

If you're interested in ATCS.... Alvin designed two styles of ATCS antenna covers that are available on his Shapeways store:

Whoever made that picture doesn't even have the correct ptc frequency nor do they have signal appliances labeled properly.

@draskouasshat - thanks for that info and confirming my suspicions.
@John - great illustration, thanks, even if a bit off, and look at those ditch lights!

I've been watching a lot of current videos on YouTube and doing screen shots for reference.  The one thing that struck me is that virtually EVERY UP loco has their standard PTC array, while BNSF uses rails - both long and short - and I've even seen some newer BNSF with what looks like the UP array.

The UP arrays are available from Fox Valley injection molded.  I got a bunch and converted all my UP GEVOs...

I wouldn't be worried about malicious hacking. The cell phone carriers use microwave links on cell towers to link towers together all over the country.  They would prefer to have fiber optic cables to each site, but not everyone has fiber out there.  And being there is often buried fiber near the mains already, the railroads could probably lease a dark strand and use it for the linking between PTC towers.
