Why is MARC running diesels on the Corridor?

Maintenance for MARC electric locos was subcontracted to Amtrak.
However, since Amtrak retired its fleet of "meatball" and "hippo" locos in favor of the Sprinter, they're no longer willing/able to service those older models.
Thus, MARC has decided to go all diesel:
