Was just reading thru an older 1001 Model Railroading Ideas Summer 1972 issue.

"The scenery was a self-concocted mix of plaster, powdered glue, asbestos shreds and decomposed granite spread over wire screen."

It's only bad if you breathe it  :D. As a bonus it makes your layout more fire retardant.

Maybe John Allen should have used this formula.

I love that meme.

But what exactly is decomposed granite?  I wasn't aware that a rock would decompose (in this lifetime at least).

Exposed granite does eventually fall apart as it weathers. Not in our lifetimes, but in it's. It's sort of gravelly.

I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.

Used all over the place out here in the West, mostly for landscaping pathways.  It doesn't blow away like sand and is very compact-able.

This isn't naturally decomposed in anyway— it is a byproduct of other stonework.

Trade names include "Gold Fines" for a yellowy brownish stuff, and I've also seen grayish "stone-dust" which is a finer version which is used underneath paving bricks.
