Decaling over Dullcoat

Some idiot (not me) finalized their model (not mine) and forgot to add a decal. How do I, I mean, would they apply a decal over dullcoat? Should they gloss again or just call it a day?

I would recommend giving it a gloss coat. Decals typically don't like flat coats.

I would recommend a glossy clear coat over Dullcote. It won't make it mirror-like glossy but it should make it easier to prevent silvering. Then use plenty of decal setting solution.  However some people swear that they have no problem decaling over flat finish.  :|

Remember all the opinions you got in this thread you started?   :)

I sure do remember that. I will never decal without sandwiching in glossing as it's turned out well for me. I just wasn't sure how dullcoat works. I was worried about things not sticking to it, getting messed up and flaking off or something. Thanks, guys!

Dullcote is just Glosscote with a flattening agent added in (probably talcum powder or sometime similar).  It is just a an organic solvent-based lacquer.  You can overcoat it with pretty much anything.

But there are also other clear flat finishes (like PollyScale which is water-based).  If that was the flat finish used on that model, you should be careful coating it with an organic solvent based lacquers. It might wrinkle.  But if you apply the gloss in few light coats, then a heavier wetter) coat then that should not be problematic.

In this case, Future. On and BTW, I think you guys were right about my base coat being the problem.

In this case, Future.

You mean the flat coat is Future or are you overcoating the flat finish with Future?

In the past, I used Future followed by Dullcoat.  That brings us to the present.
In the future, I will use Future to overcoat the flat of the past in the future thanks to the Future advice you folks have given me in the past.

Josh I'm still laughing out very LOUD very funny. Gloss first then decal then Dulcote always in that order. Decal will show silver look if gloss not used for the decal to snuggle down on.
Still laughing.
