Magnetic Uncouplers

I've installed some ceramic magnets from Radio Shack under my yard tracks just after the turnout. They work fairly good, but are within reach, so an uncoupling tool is an easy Plan B.
However, I'm getting ready to model a corner of my layout that has some industrial spurs that has the track buried in concrete. I was thinking about using the MT magnet that is buried in C80 track (I'm using C80 for the street trackage) -- figured I may be able to blend the magnet into the concrete (styrene most likely) after being painted. These spotting locations won't be as accessible as the yard.
Anyone had any experience with these sections of track with the embedded magnet?

The extent of my experience was "experimenting" 40 years ago, as I've never used magnetic uncoupling. On my test track, it worked, and the delayed uncoupling feature worked, so I'd say it would probably work fine in your case.

I used to use them all the time on my first layout. They work really good, but look like crap in open track. I used to mount them flush with the rail top or a tad below, but in your case, I don't know how much force you will lose burying them in whatever media you use for your stree trackage.

I'd be inclinded to make a practice piece. 6"x12" or something like that. It will let you try it before doing it for real. You can experiment with different types of uncouplers and paving techniques.

Why not use an under-track magnet, like the MT #308? I put mine directly under the ties. If you ballast or use pavement they would not be visible. There is an image of a non-ballasted one here at "reply #21".

The gray surface visible below the ties is the #308 magnet embedded in my plywood sub-roadbed, and the white thing is a plastic shim to support the rail joint.
As mentioned by previous posters, I would definitely recommend a test setup before installing on your layout, however.

For street trackage hiding it won't be hard. Pave around it, and paint to match. Or don't quite match, and put up a "road construction" sign!
