What color for CP Minibox car?

Hi all,

some weeks ago I received two kits for the Canadian Minibox car by Briggs Models.

The open question for me is what color these cars were.  Was it "normal" boxcar red?  And what is the matching paint currently on the market?

Being in Germany my choice of paints may be different that in the U.S. or Canada, Model Master are available here from Faller, Vallejo might be my favorite.
I also have some bottles of Polly S and hope they are still usable.

Thank you for any hint and information,

Christoph

Christoph,

One of the best colours would be TrueLine Trains "TLT 010015", "C.P. Mineral Brown" (Freight Car Red).  Puddington or Angus Shops may be able to suggest other options in other brands of paints.  In the absence of any specific colour recommendations, a medium red oxide would likely be a good choice - all depending on the amount of fading/weathering one would want to represent.

Cheers

For the majority of these ubiquitous cars they wore a colour similar to boxcar red, regardless of the livery (Spans the world, roman font, stack or script) There are some rare pictures in a few books of cars that look as if they are wearing a lighter oxide red but that could be early colour film shift. Depending on your modelling era that will help determine the livery and also the amount of colour shift that original paint might have. (Many were not completely painted over when the livery changed.

A very few got Action Red (and I mean a VERY few) and a few others got CP Rail MOW brown (icicle breaker cars and a few tool cars)
Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

I habitually use Scalecoat paints for the glossy decal ready finish they provide. In my "close enough" world (perhaps better described as "trying to capture the 'feel' of the prototype"), I've been using Scalecoat's CN mineral brown, darkened with a drop or two of black, as I find the colour out of the bottle a little too light. In the real world the colours on older boxcars either faded or darkened with age and dirt. Bottom line I think most any "boxcar red" would work, as long as it looks good to your eye.

Oh-oh. Nope, didn't see it. I have two of Mr. Brigg's models untouched since purchase. I didn't think Trueline was going to come through, so I procrastinated. Now what am I going to do...

As far as I know these have not been released in N by True Line. The flyer has been out for a long time!

I have seen the Trueline announcement and also have some on preorder with my "local" (i.e. German) hobby shop.
My "magic" worked twice, with the JnJ Milwaukee rib side box cars and the B&O wagon tops by Fine N Scale, both models were done by Fox Valley after I bought some resin kits  :o
So it might work again with the Miniboxes?

What did not work so far were the Pennsylvania X31 cars, I have the resin kits but no RTR models were announced   :D
