Great Scott!  They wanted a soundbox so I made one for them using 1980's Atari 2600 parts!

In all seriousness, the Kato box sounds really good.  I'd like to see it in DCC.

I choose to run DC on my shortline/logging layout that only has one train running at a time so I am very interested in this but need to see/hear one before buying ($279.99 MSRP).

       :|We already have the "Sound Station 312" and its variations from MRC. if I want sound I want to be able to trigger it remotely while walking around with my locomotive (DCC?) so the sound should be in the engine or a small wireless remote sends the sound to speakers where I want them under the layout like at crossings etc. I do have a 312 and I like the sounds it has, but it's remote is tethered and speakers cannot easily chained together, which appears that you can do with the KATO. Nate Goodman (Nato).

Meh....not interested at all.  Since many of my DCC engines run with sound already, I really enjoy the directional quality of it.  Running at shows with my fellow train-crazy Gregg Cudworth, who has tunnels on his section of the portable layout, I REALLY like the sound of my engines coming out of the tunnels, and even a slight (real) doppler effect as the engines go by at a grade crossing with warning whistle blasts.

Frankly, for the cost of the Kato/Soundtraxx Sound Box, a Digitrax Zephyr Plus and a Digitrax 8 bit sound decoder (which comes with a speaker) would be maybe even a bit less cost-wise after discounting...and, you'd be able to run more than one engine at the same time at different speeds and directions on the same track. 

I am not impressed.   :trollface:
