Atlas switch help

I have atlas code 80 switches.  I have problems with engines stalling over them.  The classic dead switch syndrome.  I looked at them and no problems catch my eye.  So what causes the dead switch and how can you fix them so the engines stop stalling on them?

Thanks,

Scott

Are they plastic or metal frogs?  If plastic, not much can be done other than to clean the wheels on your locomotives to improve the conductivity of the wheels that are still drawing current and taking up the slack for those on the dead frog.  If the frog is metal, you can power it through a number of methods of powering frogs.  I'll leave that description to the guys who use Code 80 track.

Get a meter and check to see if you have power to the points. If not you can solder a jumper wire to them. Next you need to make sure all of the locomotive wheels are picking up power to the motor.

I use Atlas code 80 flex and switches (Custom Line) and don't have any problem with them, even without extra jumpers. I've been pleasantly surprised that even Bachmann's little 70-tonner can crawl through several switches in sequence without stalling. But clean track and clean loco wheels are definitely your two best friends.

Good luck!

(BTW, if you have a couple right-hand Custom Line #6s you'd like to get rid of, let me know.  :D  I need two more to complete my yard.)
