There is a prototype for everything....

A K4 with smoke ears..... Say it isn't so :?

They look like boxes attached to the front of the engine.

Two scientists create a teleportation ray, and they try it out on a cricket. They put the cricket on one of the two teleportation pads in the room, and they turn the ray on.
The cricket jumps across the room onto the other pad.

I've seen a Moose head on front of steam engines....... But how about a kangaroo??? 
Notice they even moved the headlight to allow for the kangaroo.

In know what my next FEF will be " The Kangaroo Special"!!

Almost looks like Union Pacific had an early, pre-Alpha release of Photoshop 0.0.1   :) :) :)

The PRR modified a few K4s with elephant ears, streamlined, partially streamlined, solid disc drivers, etc. The amount of variation plus the post-war face lifts, tender variations, and the fact that the N&W, LIRR and ATSF owned a few makes the K4 a perfect candidate for Kato... ;)

No, those are not smoke ears (lifters).  They are temporary wood enclosures for housing of locomotive performance test equipment.

.....But that is still a kangaroo on the front of an FEF.  :D

The santa fe did not own ANY K4s. They did at one point own a a few PRR mikados but they didnt perform to standard and were put in the dead line very early.

A steam prototype that deserves to be modeled in N (on proper 5' gauge track) is the Russian AA20.
The mighty 4-14-4 that spread rails and killed every switch it rolled across.
