AC-12 loco question

The Intermountain AC-12 has a valve gear detail on the engineer side of the front engine that is different from the other three valve gears.  In checking prototype photos, I found that in deed that location is different, (though I could not find any photo that clearly looked like the model, shadows, grime etc).  Can anyone tell me what that difference is supposed to represent and why it is different? :?

I think a AC-12 is a cab forward and I didn't know Athearn made them?

Just guessing, but what you see may be reversing gear, that is usually on the engineers side.
