The canal separating the tracks in the top right is reminiscent of Lance Mindheim's Miami layout.  Might get some ideas there too.

so I took this:

and made this:

before I start messing with track, anyone have any sugestions? Building placement will be about the same as in the orginal, I dunno if I'm going to put the canal in or not ,and the short leg might have it's real estate cut down, there is a lot of empty space there.....I already know that I will have to make at a minimum 2 pieces of custom track work, both being cross overs....

I like the plan, but I hope you have a lot of #2 turnouts in stock...  The ones you have drawn are very sharp.

Mike, do you know have enough room for more of the right-hand leg?

What you've laid out on that section is sorta ho-hum.

I probably wouldn't have the canal either, but a decent sized old-style industry-type of building?  Yeah, I'd consider that.  Maybe something like the Atlas Middlesex Manufacturing building.

It ain't gonna fit as drawn on the foam.  Ed should appreciate the benchwork though.   :D

I know that it won't fit as drawn, It's all rough right now, I'll make adjustments as needed. I have 9 turnouts right now 4 left, 5 right. Cheepo ones I was given (http://fiferhobbysu770.corecommerce.com/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=11705)

I don't think I can pull off another right arm, Maybe do one coming back towards the yard....I dunno....

UPDATE: So I sat down with what I have, and some track spikes, and layed down some track to play with it, and I'm pretty happy with this right now, Nothing is perminate yet. I test ran it with some random freight a bachmann 4-6-0 and a 44 ton. It works well. I think I'm going to have to custom build a ladder for the yard, and I know for sure I got to do the crossovers.
Of course, I gotta get rid of those damn switch machines. I think I may reuse them by flipping them over, but then I gotta camoflage them, I dunno for sure if I want to reuse them, but one thing is for sure, they can't stay the way they are.

Small update, I got about everything layed out, except the yard ladder, and the industry/runaround on the other side of the yard branch. I got the basics of the curved crossover layed down and tested. Works great for my diesels, But for my 4-6-0, the drivers walk out on one branch of the cross, I think once I get the guard rails fabed up and put in, it may help. Camera battery is dead, I'll try to get some shots tomorrow. :D

Update time!

I think I am pretty happy with the trackplan as it sits now. Their is space for a small 2 bay engine house, witch the girlfriend sugested. I'm thinking I might bash a Bachmann 3 bay car shop I have already (the plate in the picture) into a 2 bay. One issue I am having though is the material. it "corrigated siding" and I don't think that was a comonly used material for railroad buildings in my era. so I may use the existing parts, and some brick patern styrine to make it a brick structure instead. Along the section oppisite of the yard, I am going to leave it as is, and put a small passenger station. the short side is going to change a little, I think I am going to do some kind of warehouse, and reposition the diverging track as a team track, not 100% on that though. Overall, what I have ended up with is a industry area, with a main line running though it. I'm currently working on operations.

so I'm open for sugestions for changes, and I do have one question. to cork roadbed or not to cork roadbed.

First of all, as has already been pointed out: 2/3 of your model RR's failed because of marriage (or the end of one). Solution: stop getting married! (learned that lesson after the first time).

Roadbed on mainline, none on yard and sidings. It helps differentiate the two.

The issue I'm seeing is that there is only one very short runaround, too short to be of much use. Recommend moving a switch:
